ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:  Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Crafts creative content for various marketing pieces promoting the University, colleges, degree programs and university events, maintaining brand standards and ensuring clarity of messaging.
  • Develops creative content for advertising campaigns for use in print, radio, outdoor, television and direct mail.
  • Assists in editing and/or rewriting existing marketing copy as necessary.
  • Works collaboratively with the Marketing Creative Services and Digital Teams to identify and coordinate opportunities in which a combination of communications tools and techniques are required.
  • Works closely and collaborates with other members in the Creative team to develop a production timeline which can be met.
  • Will meet regularly with internal clients to understand their challenges and requirements and propose and support effective communications strategies for targeting specific audiences using the appropriate tone, vehicle and frequency.
  • Research communication projects and advertising campaigns with competitors to offer ideas and suggestions to GCU internal customers accordingly.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, engaging and readable manner
  • Ability to distill information to key message points.
  • Strong proofing/copy editing skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AP style.
  • Ability to think from a customer’s point of view and how various communication platforms impact the tone and content of the message.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to work with people of various viewpoints, cultural backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Highly effective communications skills with a good command of the English language.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Knowledge of printing processes and web content development
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills with the ability to schedule and manage concurrent multiple projects or events.
  • Ability to work independently,
  • Computer proficiency utilizing routine office software such as MS Office Suite, email, internet, blog software, etc., and a familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends or holidays when necessary.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background investigation.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution preferably in journalism, communications, marketing or English.
  • Minimum of 5 years' direct writing and editing experience in a creative services, marketing or advertising environment preferred.
  • Proven experience (portfolio) of writing for a variety of audiences.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience and education may be substituted upon supervisor’s approval.

  • Work may be characterized as primarily performed in an office environment.
  • Work involves occasionally using a computer QWERTY keyboard for inputting data, preparing reports, posting information, correspondence, etc.
  • Work involves occasionally using a computer monitor, smart phone display, iPad/Notebook size display to view, review, read, research, identify data, compare data, identify errors, and reconcile information.
  • Work involves occasionally moving about the office.
  • Work involves occasionally moving about the campus or satellite facilities which may involve driving golf carts, or other motorized means, self-locomotion, or driving a vehicle to off-campus locations.
  • Work frequently involves communicating to individuals, small and large groups, in person or via telephone, video display/conferencing, net meetings, or other available technical means and presenting information to others.
  • Work frequently involves reading comprehension to understand and decode information which may include instructions.
  • Work may occasionally involve reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, carrying, holding which may entail a full range of motion to assist in setting up or tearing down displays and tables or other situations involving exhibits.  This may involve lifting, moving and carrying up to 30 pounds.
