Job Title: IT Security - Overclock Experience Security Technician

Location: On campus. Encanto Apartments / Overclock Experience

Position Summary/Position:

This position offers a hands-on opportunity for a student to gain real-world experience in cybersecurity and system administration. As the Security Technician (Student Worker) for the Overclock Experience at Encanto Apartments, you will help build, support, and maintain an immersive cyber experience designed to simulate real security scenarios. During the academic year, you will work part-time hours balanced with your coursework, and you may work full-time in the summer to dive deeper into projects.

In this role, you will configure and manage various IT infrastructure and security tools. You’ll assist in both the development and maintenance of cybersecurity lab environments. Additionally, you will create documentation and training materials to help fellow students navigate the systems, all while collaborating closely with technical staff, faculty mentors, and other students in a fast-paced, learning environment.

Student Worker - School year (20 hours/week), Summer & Holiday (40 hours/week)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Virtual Infrastructure: Deploy and manage virtual infrastructure using a variety of tools to create and maintain cyber lab environments.
  • Logging & Analytics: Set up and monitor logging and analytics systems for security monitoring and analysis.
  • Automation: Automate system configuration and provisioning to improve efficiency and consistency across the lab infrastructure.
  • System administration: Conduct system administration tasks including patching, account management, and configuration.
  • Documentation & Training: Develop user guides, technical documentation, and training materials to support user onboarding and ongoing training.
  • Research: Perform research on cybersecurity tools, techniques, and best practices to support program innovation.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a relevant degree program (e.g., Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science).
  • Familiarity with operating systems (Linux and Windows), command-line tools, and scripting.
  • Strong interest in cybersecurity, systems administration, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Basic knowledge of security concepts, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention, SIEMs, and authentication.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially for creating user-friendly documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and creative environment.
  • Experience with virtualization or cloud environments (e.g., Proxmox, VMware, Azure, AWS).
  • Familiarity with tools such as Splunk, Elastic, Wireshark, or open-source security tools.
  • Knowledge of common cybersecurity frameworks or certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, NIST, MITRE ATT&CK).
  • Self-starter mentality with a passion for building solutions and learning new technologies in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s program or Master’s program.
  • Retain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.
