A Standardized Patient is a trained individual who can accurately and consistently portray the role of a patient in a simulated setting. They will reenact the history, personality, physical findings, emotional structure and response pattern of an actual patient, family member, or health care provider. After each simulation, a standardized patient must be able to provide individualized feedback on interpersonal and clinical skills to a Faculty member.

Training will be provided based on what examinations are to occur. Standardized patients must pass the required patient competencies before being deployed as a standardized patient.

Responsibilities:

  • Portray all aspects of the patient scenario, including the history of the current problem, affect/behavior, and physical findings in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.
  • Be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the student’s learning experience and must be comfortable having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed by student learners
  • Review patient cases provided in advance to practice ahead of time.
  • Provide written and face-to-face verbal feedback to the supervising faculty member
  • Accept ongoing feedback and incorporate that feedback into the case simulation
  • Respond to e-mails in a timely fashion
  • Be on time and keep scheduled appointments
  • All other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Prior work experience required; prior experience as a standardized patient preferred.
  • Basic computer skills for email communication, document printing, and checklist documentation.
  • Must be willing to agree to a flexible schedule of scheduled appointments, some may require evening appointments.
  • Must be able to travel to scheduled facility reliably
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must be able to occasionally walk upstairs with reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to sit and/or lay upon an examining table with reasonable accommodation.
